An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, has come to mean someone who intentionally posts messages about sensitive topics constructed to cause controversy in an online community such as an online discussion forum or USENET groups in order to bait users into responding.
[1] They may also plant images and data on networks that others may find disturbing in order to cause confrontation. They often change screen names or acquire multiple screen names to cause confusion and gain credibility by agreeing with themselves in forum debates.

More specifically a troll is an insult or accusation made against a poster. It would be highly unusual for any internet poster to claim the title of troll[citation needed], rather a community member may sometimes try to deflate a post that is controversial or thought provoking by referring to it as “trolling”.

Properly, to call someone a troll is to say that any dispute over a post is not valid not because the issues raised are not valid, but to claim the intent of the poster invalidates the post.

As a speech act the term troll is sometimes used as an ad hominem argument, attacking the poster rather than the content or issues of the post.

,,,A troll causes controversy …A troll gets others to post …A troll posts thought-provoking ideas …A troll brings about confrontations

Well, if I’ve got this right, I reckon I’m a troll. You guys have recognized me all along. I don’t do some of that troll stuff, but I’ll confess to these four.

Gojo, “baiting” behavior is not a good thing. Like, when ReedJ starts with his eternal misogyny. He is baiting the women. He wants them to respond and get Off Topic. It’s his own little power trip, and then he can say to himself,

“See how stupid they all are! All I have to do is say one thing against women, and they are all over me like flies on shit.”

Just his own little ego trip.

Trolls are not “thought-provoking,” they are blood-pressure-raising, anger-inducing idiots. Their main focus is to draw attention to themselves. Like Mimi/Fireflies–whatever she calls herself now. The Expert on Everything. Always quick to try and make others feel stupid. I don’t talk to such people in real life–why should I, on the internet?

Why do you see “bringing about confrontations” as a good thing? Isn’t the goal “reasoned discussion?”

You are quite good at ad hom attacks. Very willing to attack posters with nasty puns on their nicknames and the like. Childish stuff, mostly, but, whatever floats your boat…
